Essay Two is always attached to a Passage, Prose or Poem
Tactics: Identify the literary devices that are being asked for in the question:
After figuring out which might be the literary devices the question is asking you for.. begin to read the passage.

Diction:
Since you are reading a passage you can see how the author chooses the words(word choice), you can identify this while you read which can help you connected to the question being asked as well as the fact that for essay two you need to prove your statements, with information from literary devices.
Tone:
While reading the passage/poem the tone can be identified through the diction of the author as well as certain actions characters might take. Tone can help you write a better essay because of what essay question number two typically asks which may have to do with setting or mostly how two characters have a "relationship" of some sort.
Detail:
Detail can be something easily identified but something that can help you look deeper into the passage as well as the fact that it can help you connect easier to other literary devices and most importantly give you something to base your answer correctly to the passage.

The Main Idea
Most of the Essay questions that are from section two number two, have to do with the author or speaker of the prose. You basically have to look for the author's purpose and the speakers purpose. You have to explain how the author /speaker uses, reveals or depicts an important aspect of the passage.
Example : Analyze the literary devices the author uses to show the social values and customs of the day had changed and the day gone by.
Once you understand how the author reveals or depicts social values, all you have to do now is explain how the author uses literary elements to reveal or depict social values.
First you start by discovering the your main idea of the question. Then support the main idea with literary elements used in the passage.

Your main idea can describe anything that has to do with the passage, it can vary from

-Attitude
-Purpose
-Characters
-Themes
Strategies
* Annotating : Highlight the question, what are they asking you to look for? What is the author/ speaker trying to say? While reading the passage, underline anything you find important to the meaning, author or anything that contributes to literary elements. Paraphrase any important or unclear details in the passage so that you understand how the literary devices come into play.
* Writing Your Essay: When writing your essay make sure your paragraphs always connect back to the essay question. Avoid summarizing the passage. Make sure you use enough examples or literary elements and details to support your main idea. When writing down these examples be explicit and coherent.
